EGHAM HOLLOWEGIANS 16:5 LIGHTWATER
To
open the season, Egham Hollowegians welcomed Lightwater to Kings
Lane. It was an excellent day for rugby - the pitch was in good
nick and the rain held off. This was the youngest side EHRFC had
fielded in a long time, skippered by newly elected captain "Neeps".
The
game got off to a flying start with EHRFC given an early fright
by Lightwater - poor defense nearly leaking the first try. However,
EHRFC picked themselves up and goood tight play sucked in the defense,
releasing new centre partnership Sam Walker and Hugh on some penetrating
runs. Lightwater's superb defense kept EHRC out, but not for long.
A
quick tapped penalty was taken on by veteran Billy Rankin, the ball
was recycled and Josh Burdett scampered over for the first score.
Vice Captain "Macca" converted.
Concerted
pressure from EHRFC, with good close work from new boy Rob, resulted
in another penalty, and Josh again broke a couple of tackles to
score.
After
half time, EHRFC went of the boil and struggled to contain Lightwater,
who eventually crossed for a try. However, EHRFC hit back with a
couple of late penalties through Macca to make the final score 16:5
to EHRFC.
A
warm welcome was extended to some new faces, with solid performances
from EK, Hugh, Rob, Chris, Ben and Kash.
For
his efforts, Rob was awarded Man of the Match: if he wins any more
he'll have to learn to drink alcohol! All in all, a good start.
Some good work done, with lots to work on come Tuesday night.
